Catch Yourself
You know when so much stuff is happening at a time and you really don’t even notice until one small thing happens to just tip everything over the scale. Well, I woke up this morning with energy that I get from who knows where because I don’t sleep and went to the bathroom to get ready. To first give context, I’m running low on contacts and for contacts and glasses wearers we all know we try to make a 6 month supply last a year because this life is expensive and they make us pick glasses or contacts every year because who cares that we need both ( whole other problem). Anyway, as I was putting in my second to last contact it fell off my finger and down the drain. Is that the worst thing that could have ever happened to me. No. Is it extremely unfortunate? Definitely. At that very second I really didn’t even react. Life was still losing the race against me. It didn’t take until I had put on my 1000 layers of winter clothes and went outside to walk to class in what felt like below 0 weather that I almost burst into tears. It was the perfect time because I cry when I’m cold anyway and for some reason the thought of my contact going down the drain came back into my head and I really just felt overwhelmed. About a contact? Not exactly, more so the start of life catching up to me. The key to staying one step ahead of everything is to not slow down. Probably impossible, but I haven’t found any other possible solutions and at that moment as I was walking to class I was forced to slow down.
Ok, so the last part was kind of a joke. The whole top piece is actually a warning to not get like me where you’re crying over a contact. You know when you’re pushing you’re limits. Once you feel like things may be starting to go over your head, don’t wait until you feel like your drowning, by then it could be too late. Start early and start small. Break big projects down to smaller assignments for yourself. Wake up a little earlier to have time to breath, starting off the day rushing can create that tone for the rest of your day. Make sure you have a mental/written list of priorities. What needs to be done today? What can I hold off on until tomorrow? Take time to have mental breaks or trust me you’ll break down. What helps me the most is thinking on the next time I’ll be doing something fun/relaxing so I can get through all the stuff I have to do.
CATCH YOURSELF! Be sure that you are being the person you need to be for yourself. If you don't take the steps to make sense of what's going on life will take you and it happens in what seems like all at once. Even worse, you can become a functional disfunction and seem to have the " major" things together such as school or work and everything else is just like a crumbling wall. Make sure you are being honest with yourself when things don't seem to be lining up, no one gains anything from pretending. I'll say it once again CATCH YOURSELF and let me be the first to say though, it will be ok.
